Blacks, Latinos Less Satisfied With Conditions in the United States

A majority of blacks (83 percent) say they are dissatisfied with conditions in general in the United States, while only 15 percent are "satisfied with the way things are going" in the nation, according to an August 2004 Gallup Poll. This satisfaction figure is down from 37 percent in 2001. Approximately a third (35 percent) of Latinos are "satisfied with the way things are going" in the nation, dropping from a majority (53 percent) in 2001. Latinos' displeasure with the current state of the nation rose from 44 percent in 2001 to 60 percent this year. Blacks, Latinos Less Satisfied With Their Lives Than Whites

Only 37 percent of blacks said they were "very satisfied" with their lives as a whole, compared with 42 percent of Latinos and 55 percent of whites in the United States in 2003, according to a poll by the Gallup Organization. A large number of blacks were "somewhat satisfied," bringing their total satisfaction level up to 82 percent, but even this is lower than whites' total satisfaction, which registers 92 percent. Only 17 percent of blacks said they were dissatisfied with their lives, similar to the 14 percent of Latinos who say this, but double the rate seen among whites (8 percent).
