Statistics of the Month - August
GLBT Students School Climate Survey
- Nine out of ten students reported hearing at least one derogatory remark regarding GLBT sexual orientation either frequently or often.
- 37.8% of students experienced physical harassment based on their sexual orientation.
- GBLT students were found to be five times more likely to skip school due to safety concerns.
- The average GPA for GLBT students who reported being physically harassed frequently was half a grade lower than GLBT students who experienced less harassment (a GPA of 2.6 compared to 3.1).
- Only 9 states and the District of Columbia utilize comprehensive anti-bullying laws that specifically address issues relating to sexual orientation; only three of those bodies address gender identity.
- States with anti-bullying policies reported significantly lower rates of verbal harassment (31.6% compared to 40.8%).
