Statistics of the Month - December
Do you know America? Where are people of color living?
- From 2000-2004, Florida, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina and Massachusetts all saw population growth that was both rapid (over 200 percent increase) and sizable (more than 200,000 additional Hispanics per state).
- Nearly 60 percent of all African Americans lived in 10 states: New York, Florida, Georgia, Texas, California, Illinois, North Carolina, Maryland, Louisiana, and Virginia.
- In six southern states (Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina Georgia, Maryland and Alabama) more than 1 in 4 people is African American.
- Western states had relatively low proportions. African Americans represented less than 5 percent of the population in most western states, including less than 1 percent in Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Montana.
- African Americans represented one-third or more of the population of Washington D.C. (more than half of the population of Washington, D.C.), Mississippi, and Louisiana, while they represent under 5 percent of the population in 20 states.
- About 35 percent of Asians live in California, 10 percent in New York, and 6 percent in Texas. These three states account for more than half of the Asian population.
- Ten states with the largest Asian populations: California, New York, Texas, New Jersey, Hawaii, Illinois, Washington, Florida, Virginia and Massachusetts.
