    Diversity in South Africa
    By Alan Richter, Heather Price
On February 11, 1990 when Nelson Mandela was released from prison on his long walk, not only to his freedom, but to the liberation of South Africa, diversity in that country became a new strategic lever, totally opposite to its past abuse. South Africa moved from "divide and rule," treating diversity as a liability, to regarding diversity as an asset with the goal of real unity and strength.

Men and women: From cautious to comfortable
    By Muriel Lazar
Male/female differences have dominated societies for thousands of years. The genetic, socialized, or perceived differences have been so poorly understood that they have been viewed as potentially troublesome and therefore were to be avoided. In American businesses, the conflict has gone underground.

Female sexuality - A view point
"The implicit theory of female sexuality...casts the woman as the hunter and the man as the passive victim." Fatima Mernissi thus describes the social configuration of men and women in the Middle East, in the late 1960s, in her book, Beyond the Veil (Schenkman, 1975). Her theory may be helpful to Westerners struggling to understand why women are obligated to veil their entire bodies in Middle Eastern countries, like Saudi Arabia, where tradition is honored. Instead of presenting women as powerless, Mernissi affirms they possess a "negative will to power" that may hurt a man, his family, and the larger community. This natural power of a woman may easily cause fitna or disorder. The chadour, the head-to-toe shroud that a woman is compelled to wear in public, thus neutralizes this "negative will" which, among other things, gives women a "hearty appetite for suffering and surrender." Because of this "negative power," a woman's place is in her home.

Two Viewpoints on Selling Cultural Training: Persuading Top Management - Part 2
"My job is to invite managers to use cross-cultural training, to explain what it is, how it can help them solve problems, but to hastily corner them into using it - that's a very subtle shift," Nancy Meader exclaims. Meader is Assistant Vice President in the International Training Department, Manufacturers Hanover Corporation, New York. Her comments are molded by her experience in U.S. multicultural corporations. She also conducts seminars at conferences for consultants who are trying to promote and sell cross-cultural training.
