In what many would have viewed as a dark future, Steve Hanamura envisioned bright possibilities for himself and the world around him. A Japanese American, Steve was born totally blind during the World War II era. With his own brand of vision, Steve has become a sought-after consultant and public speaker in the areas of leadership development, managing and valuing diversity, team building, managing personal and organizational change, and cultural oneness (a different look at diversity).
Hanamura Consulting, Inc. was founded by Steve in 1986. With a national client list spanning Fortune 500 companies to regional not-for-profit institutions, Steve is highly regarded for his unique perspectives on organizational management, and distinct leadership and diversity training techniques. Steve has authored two books, most recently I Can See Clearly: A Different Look at Leadership.
Among Steve's many passions is a desire to see more diverse individuals in prominent media roles. An articulate and spirited speaker, he is himself a natural for media interviews.
Steve received his Master's Degree from the University of Oregon and his undergraduate degree from Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. He has been honored with the Meritorious Service Award for the Presidents' Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities and as the Multi-Cultural Network Trainer of the Year by the American Society for Training and Development. He has been president of the Portland Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development, as well as board chairman for the Oregon Commission for the Blind. A Torchbearer for the 1996 Olympics, Steve is an avid runner, participating in marathons and other events as well as having his own "Hood to Coast" team, a two-day relay of nearly 200 miles from Mount Hood to Seaside, Oregon. He is father of three and is married to Becky Hanamura.
