NAACP TO HOST “WE ARE ONE” LABOR SUMMIT IN PHOENIX
Conference Will Empower Leaders with a Progressive Joint Economic Agenda

(Washington, D.C.) - The NAACP will sponsor and co-convene a national training event with more than 1,000 labor and community organizers in Phoenix, Arizona, December 1-4, 2011. The “We Are One” Conference is geared to fortify bonds between African American and Latino communities throughout the country, with a focus on creating an economic agenda that bolsters both communities and strengthens all Americans.

“While we may come from different backgrounds, we all share the American Dream,” stated Benjamin Todd Jealous, president and CEO of the NAACP. “The summit provides an opportunity work together so we can transform our dream into reality for all Americans.”

“We Are One” is hosted by a coalition of labor and human/civil rights organizations, including the NAACP, National Council of La Raza, Service Employees International Union, Council for Black Trade Unionists, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement and the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance. Coalition members share common goals of reflecting the nation’s socioeconomic diversity. They aspire to see America fulfill to its founding creed of holding all men “equal...endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights...(of) life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

"Throughout the history of the NAACP, we have always recognized that economic justice is at the foundation of social justice,” said Dedrick Muhammad, Senior Director of Economic Programs for the NAACP and Executive Director of the Association’s Financial Freedom Center. “We have come to Phoenix, Arizona to strategize and learn from our civil rights and labor rights partners."

Conference leaders Benjamin Todd Jealous, President & CEO of NAACP, Janet Murguia, President & CEO of the National Council for La Raza and Judith Brown-Dianis, Co-Director of the Advancement Project will open “We are One” by discussing the importance of African American and Latino bridge-building and broad based coalitions throughout the country. The conference will also consist of various plenary sessions, panels and keynote luncheons that address key issues such as community mobilization, immigration, voters’ rights, human rights, jobs, education, housing, health care and economic justice. In addition to the trainings, the conference will feature keynote addresses by Congressman Raul Grijalva and Rev. Jesse Jackson.

Throughout the conference participants will be invited to participate in breakout sessions to develop grassroots community strategies around social and economic issues. The conference will conclude with a rally at the Occupy Phoenix settlement.

The NAACP has established a strong legacy of working with labor movements at national and local levels. Most recently, the NAACP was as lead organizer for the One Nation March where nearly 200 progressive groups came together in a multiracial movement to advocate for the reordering of our nation’s priorities - primarily investing in the American worker.

“We Are One” is open to all progressive labor and community organizers. Register online at www.weareonemovingamericaforward.org or onsite;
registration costs are $150.00.
