Cultural insights: The link between cultural competence and bias – Part three of our four-part series: “The new face of bias in the workplace”
By William G. Shackelford

“Individual cultural competence is defined as the state of being capable and willing to function effectively in the context of cultural differences.”

Individuals with high levels of cultural competence possess a number of characteristics including: "an awareness of their own cultural values; an awareness and acceptance of differences; a broad base of cultural knowledge; and the ability to interact successfully in different cultural settings and with diverse cultural groups" (Shackelford 1).
